Tadalafil works by inhibiting the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE-5), which is responsible for breaking down cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). By increasing cGMP levels, sildenafil promotes relaxation of smooth muscle and dilation of blood vessels within the penis, allowing for increased blood flow during sexual stimulation. This enhanced blood flow helps support the ability to achieve and maintain an erection. Tadalafil does not cause an erection on its own and requires sexual arousal to be effective.
